Groundworks Project

Richmond Street

Client: Private developer.

Location: Richmond Street, Petone, Lower Hutt, Wellington.

Scope of works: Multistage townhouse development – earthworks; sewer and stormwater mains; water mains; private sewer and stormwater drainage; large stormwater retention tank; services trenching and installation; ground improvements; foundation preparation; road construction – kerbing, pavement, sealing; footpaths; carparks; landscaping – planting, landscape paths, stairs and grassing.

Stats: 94 unit development, 400m3 stormwater retention tank installation, upsizing of existing manhole to 2m diameter on pumping chamber. Installation of 1500mm diameter manhole with baffle wall at a depth greater than 2m. Total pipe length 2116m (sewer and stormwater pipes), 1246m of water reticulation pipes, pavement area 1500m2.

Challenges: Working around other trades; constructing stormwater connections to the street while maintaining site access; maintaining site access for builders while constructing drainage mains; low-lying ground with some works completed below sea level.

Solutions: Strong communication with the project team to identify potential issues and find solutions early; construction of alternate access routes around works to maintain access; pre-planned dewatering system to ensure excavations remained dry, e.g. gravel importation.
