Groundworks Project

Porirua Pump Station

Client: Commercial builder.

Location: Porirua.

Scope of works: Siteworks and drainage for a high-density housing development. This project required deep drainage work, including a 7.0m pump station.

Stats: 7.0m deep pump station, installed using slide rail shoring system. Consisted of 3 units weighing 7t each.

Challenges: The challenges we met with this project included geotechnical factors (slope stability and sub-surface soil and rock conditions), the infrastructure limitations of the location, and the requirement for deep drainage. Also, the project needed to be completed within the centre of a working construction site.

Solutions: The original design and consent had specified a fibreglass chamber type, which had a very long lead time. Because of the location of the structure, installation was a critical part of the activity. We worked with the designer and head contractor to amend the consent to allow the installation of the concrete chamber which reduced the lead time by 6 weeks, minimising programme risk. We also interfaced extensively with the head contractor to safely manage movements of people and material around the site during the works.
